While some of us may’ve got creative with papier-mâché and paints, others with PVC glue and pipecleaners, this clever Year 4 student puts our childhood school projects to shame with her game-changing invention.
Using Velcro loops and a stretchy cord, Sophie Lawson, nine, created Sophie’s Baby Forget-Me-Not: a device used to keep parents from accidentally forgetting their children in the car.
The idea came about the night before Sophie’s project was due, with her mother, Jenny, giving her the inspiration.
“The only thing I can think of that REALLY needs to be invented,” Jenny said, “is something to keep parents from forgetting their babies in the car.”
“Eventually, [Sophie articulated] that we would need something to attach to the parent, and something to attach to the child’s car seat, and something that would stretch in between,” Jenny continues.
“It would have to be adjustable, to work in a variety of different-sized cars.”

The device, which cost the Ohio family only $11 to make, isn’t available online – and this is because Sophie and her family aren’t selling the design.
“Sophie’s not selling her invention,” Jenny says.
“But she doesn’t mind if you copy her design – she wants parents everywhere to make these simple devices and use them every day to ensure no-one ever accidentally leaves their babies in the car again.”
We’re as proud of humble Sophie as much as her mum is!
