A teenager has fulfilled his dying wish to marry his girlfriend, just days before he passed away.
Sixteen-year-old Omar Al Shaikh suffered from acute myeloid leukaemia. When doctors told the teen he was too sick to have the necessary stem cell transplant to save his life, Omar was determined to live long enough to do one thing – marry his girlfriend Amie. And he did.
The pair married surrounded by family and friends at Birmingham’s Queen Elizabtheth Hospital on Friday.
On Monday, Omar passed away in hospital.
In an interview with The Daily Mail UK Amie said she was absolutely heartbroken.
“The ceremony was so sad, but really lovely,” she said.
“I knew I wanted to stand by him through it all… He is such a lovely soul – I wanted to spend as much time as I had with him as possible.”
The pair met at high school when he was in remission.
But in March this year doctors said his condition had worsened and ordered rounds of chemotherapy.
Sadly, on June 14, doctors explained the treatment had been unsuccessful, and the cancer had spread to Omar’s bone marrow.
“He proposed on the Wednesday and I just didn’t think twice,” Aimie told reporters.
“We asked our parents, and they both gave us permission.”
“Mum told me to do whatever I needed to make him happy.”
