The birth of a new child is one of the happiest times of your life. For Carlos Morales, it was filled with mixed emotions as he lost his soul mate, but gained a family.
Carlos Morales and his wife, Erica, struggled for years to conceive and start a family, they’d even suffered from a miscarriage. When they found out they were expecting quadruplets, the parents-to-be were completely overjoyed.
In the early morning hours of January 16th, Erica and Carlos welcomed four healthy newborns into their lives. Carlos described that day as “the best day of my life.”
He is now the proud father of Tracey, Carlos Jr, Paisley and Erica.
Carlos couldn’t contain his excitement. He was now a father to four beautiful babies, but within hours the best day of his life turned into the worst.
Erica, had originally seemed fine, but then she went into hypovolemic shock, an emergency condition involving massive blood loss. The 36-year-old mother-of-four died at 1:20 a.m.
“I was shocked,” Carlos said. “I was devastated.”
The bittersweet end to Erica’s life brought Carlos his ultimate joy, his babies.
“Nothing in my life had ever made me this happy,” he told People.
“These babies don’t know yet what blessings they have given me. They have given me four reasons to live.”
Erica’s mother Sondra has been helping her son-in-law raise the babies. Taking each day as it comes, the pair appeared on TODAY USA with the newborns.
“We’re just doing our best,” Carlos said, adding that the babies are “healthy and growing every day.”
Their moving story launched a GoFundMe site for Carlos and the babies.
“I’m feeling really, really grateful for everybody that just came together and helped us,” he said.
“It’s funny how things turn out. Bittersweet, but at the same time, thanks to God, and the outpouring support of the public, it’s been phenomenal.
“And I’d like to say thank you to each and every one of you. All the support we’ve gotten from you, we appreciate it.”
The children’s grandmother now lives with the family, and she too was overwhelmed by the support.
“It’s funny how things turn out. Bittersweet, but at the same time, thanks to God, and the outpouring support of the public, it’s been phenomenal,” she said.
“And I’d like to say thank you to each and every one of you. All the support we’ve gotten from you, we appreciate it.”
Their moving story had touched so many, including Jennifer Garner, who was also on the TODAY USA show.
“You showed those babies and Leah Still, I just watched it, I can’t even take it. The Today show is just too tough for me!” she said about Carlos and his babies.
