Police found the girl’s body in the bathroom of an apartment in Dunmore Terrace in Auchenflower around 1.45am (AEST), after they were requested to make a welfare check on the family.

The body of her 49-year-old mother was found about 1.5 kilometres away in Toowong about 5:30am.

Detective Acting Superintendent Geoff Sheldon said she appeared to have taken her own life, 9 News reports.

Mr Sheldon said the father of the girl, 65, had been asleep in the apartment when police arrived.

“As you can imagine, nothing could be much more horrific than that,” he told reporters in Indooroopilly.

“He’s horrendously upset. Any death of a child is horrendous, this is particularly so unfortunately.”

The girl has an eight-year-old sister who was not in the apartment at the time.

Police are now trying to determine how the child died and who is responsible.
