Bali Nine’s Andrew Chan marries on the eve of his execution

On the eve of his impending execution, Bali Nine's Andrew Chan has tied the knot to fiancée, Febyanti Herewila, in an emotional prison ceremony.

Andrew’s brother Michael Chan confirmed the nuptials to Fairfax after visiting his brother on Nusakambangan Island, where he is currently incarcerated in Besi prison.

“Feby and Andrew had a celebration this evening,” Michael said of the married couple.

“It’s tough times, but it’s happy times at the same time.”

Before adding: “So hopefully the president will still show some compassion, some mercy so these two young people can carry on with their lives.”

The 31-year-old inmate popped the question in February after learning his plea for clemency was rejected by Indonesian President Joko Widodo.

“Andrew is one of the strongest, kindest people I have ever met,” Feby told News Corp Australia of her now-husband.

“I have never seen him as just a prisoner or someone who is on death row.”

The Bali nine duo Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran were handed their final execution notices over the weekend.

The now-Mrs Chan is a pastor who frequently visited Andrew at Kerobokan jail in Bali, where he was previously held, as part of her outreach work.

It was through her guidance that Andrew was ordained as a minister back in February and now runs the chapel and services for inmates.

“I love him for who he is. And I see what he does for other people and that makes me love him more,” she said.

“If you ask me why do I love him, it’s because he also has weaknesses but he also has a lot of good things about him. I accept him the way he is. I am also very proud of him.”

The wedding was officiated by Salvation Army minister and long-time friend of the family, David Soper, who will also be Andrew’s spiritual adviser when he is executed.
