Mobile phone reception will be cut in three Brisbane suburbs for over a week

20,000 residents will be affected for over a week.

Residents of Gaythorne, Michelton and Everton Park in Brisbane’s north-west are outraged over disruptions to their phone service which will last for 10 days.

Why isn’t my phone working?

According to a Telstra announcement the problem stems from work being done to the surface of Brookside Shopping Centre’s cooling tower, which will mean Telstra have to temporarily shut down their mobile base station.

Other service providers who use the roof will also be affected by the work.

Telstra will stagger the disruptions to minimise impact according to the following schedule.

Gaythorne: 30th January – 9th February

Mitchelton: 12nd February – 22nd February

Everton Park: 23rd February – 7th March

And for a small win, the interruptions will not be in effect on the weekend – only between 6am-6pm Monday to Friday.

During these times Telstra users will be unable to make or receive calls or texts on their mobile phone.

An issue flagged by the phone company is that some customers may have difficulty calling Triple Zero on a mobile device at certain times in some locations, which is more than a little concerning.

This is because “customers’ devices will not be able to access the other operators’ mobile networks for Triple Zero calls.”

Concern has been raised by those in the area with medical conditions or who work from home, but Telstra is assuring the public that WI-Fi Calls will still be available and pay phones in the area will be free to use.
