A young girl has been sexually assaulted at a Melbourne cinema.

The young teen was watching a movie with her mother at the Village Cinemas at Century City, Glen Waverley, on a Saturday afternoon last month when she was sexually assaulted by a male stranger.

The man sat two seats away from the teenager and placed a coat between them. During the movie he reached under the coat and assaulted the girl.

The girl’s mother saw what was happening and confronted the man. He ran from the scene when she went to report the incident to staff.

Police say that the man is in his 20’s with medium to solid build and short black hair. He was wearing tan pants, a blue zip up jumper and glasses.

Detectives with the Box Hill sexual offences and child abuse investigation team have released an image taken from CCTV footage of a man they wish to speak to.

Police say that anyone with information should contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000
