The “world’s saddest” polar bear could soon have a new home if a British zoo gets their way. The animal welfare group Animals Asia has announced that the Yorkshire Wildlife Park in Doncaster, England, has made a public offer to give him a new home.

The bear, named Pizza, made headlines earlier this year when tragic images surfaced showing the living conditions at the polar bear’s current home in The Grandview Aquarium, which is inside a shopping mall in Guangzhou, China. Animals Asia started a petition calling for the zoo to be closed, which gained more than 270,000 signatures, after a tragic video of Pizza was released.

Pizza’s new home could be “Project Polar”, a habitat specifically created for polar bears in Yorkshire Wildlife Park that includes 10 acres to roam and two lakes.

Animal Asia’s Animal Welfare Director Dave Neale said in a statement: “The good news now for Grandview is that they now have the chance to put their mistake right. Thanks to this incredible offer from Yorkshire Wildlife Park there can be a happy ending and the negative publicity they have suffered can yet be turned into a positive news story.

“From talking to them I know they know that mistakes have been made in terms of their animal facilities and ongoing care.”

The charity also said that no financial payment would be offered for the bear.
