World Trade Center window washers rescued

World Trade Centre dramatic window washer rescue

World Trade Center window washers trapped 69 floors up.

New York firefighters have rescued two window washers who were stuck on collapsed scaffolding 69 storeys above the ground at the World Trade Center site in Manhattan.

According to reports the cradle malfunctioned on Wednesday shortly before 1pm. Around 2 p.m., rescue workers were seen cutting a hole in a window and pulling the dangling washers to safety.

The new World Trade Center building is unusually strong and can withstand the weight of about two cars, so cutting through the surface was presumably difficult.

The Fire Department of New York told the BBC the two people were secure and uninjured.

The mishap occurs only one week into the new building’s opening since the original World Trade Towers were destroyed 13 years ago.
