A young UK dressmaker is recycling old wedding dresses and turning them into tiny gowns for stillborn and miscarried babies.
The woman, Lisha Thomas, 20, was first inspired to transform the clothes when a member of her family lost a baby girl last year and struggled to find anything appropriately sized for.
Even doll’s clothes were too big.
Lisha is now hoping to kick-start her voluntary enterprise called Little Gowns, urging people on the Facebook page to send dresses to her to recreate. She then will donate them to local hospitals and funeral homes.
Lisha has now had to issue a callout to volunteers to help her prepare the garments. She was overwhelmed by the generous response of people wanting to help her cause – she was sent 58 dresses in a single week!
“For very small babies, I make a shape similar to a square pocket so the baby can be wrapped inside and his or her face will still be showing,” said Lisha.
“For baby girls I make a small gown and for baby boys I make a set of waistcoat and shorts because I think it’s nice for a little boy rather than a gown.”
