Police in the Chinese city of Xian discovered the woman’s body on March 1, surrounded by scratch marks and other signs she had tried desperately to escape her metal tomb.
It is believed she became trapped in the elevator at the end of January. Maintenance staff in the apartment complex were on leave due to the month-long Lunar New Year festivities and many other residents in the building were away on holidays.
The residents who remained in the building throughout the holiday period used the complex’s other lift, reportedly believing the other one to simply be out of service.
It is not known how the woman’s month-long disappearance went unreported by family or friends.
