Scouring the world and rescuing dogs from shelters to bring them home to your sanctuary sounds like a dream job, but for Danielle Eden, co-founder of Dog Tales Rescue Sanctuary, Ontario, the job can sometimes be a nightmare.
Arriving at a shelter in Israel with a plan to rescue a few dogs and take them home to her 50-acre property, she was horrified to find the entire shelter was squalid and the shelters inhabitants were in big trouble, reports The Dodo.
Over 250 dogs were crammed into a space designed for 70. It was infested with rats, both alive and dead, and many of the dogs had medical issues that needed immediate attention.
They were fed on bread, of which there was not enough and every day the dogs fought for survival.
Once faced with this harrowing scene, Danielle knew she could never decide which dogs she would save, and which she would leave behind so she did the only thing she could think of…
She bought the entire shelter.
Since then, Dog Tales has taken responsibility for all 250 pooches, locating as many as they can within Israel and sending another 25 home to Ontario.
Although 150 dogs still remain, the shelter is undergoing a major overhaul, while veterinarians attend to the animal’s health.
The goal is to take all of the animals back to Canada and adopt them out to loving families.
