A woman accused of fatally stabbing her daughter in the neck allegedly called her husband to say she had “done something to the baby”, a court has heard.
Melbourne woman Umal Sharif Abdurahman, 28, has been charged with one count of murder after her 13-month-old baby was found dead and appeared in the Magistrates Court late Monday.
Detective Senior Constable Jennifer Booth said the accused called the baby’s father around 11am Monday saying, “I have done something to the baby”.
The call prompted him to leave work and ask his brother-in-law to check on his wife and children.
When the brother-in-law arrived at the home in Reservoir, in Melbourne’s north, he found Abdurahman with her three other children, aged two, three and four, standing outside the house.
On directions from one of the children, he found the baby in a bedroom with what appeared to be a single knife wound in the throat, Det Sen Cons Booth said.
When emergency services arrived, the baby was announced dead and Abdurahman was declared unfit for interview by police.
Det Sen Cons Booth said the accused, who appeared in court without representation, had a psychiatric illness and significant mental health issues.
The couple’s other three children were not injured.
The case has been adjourned until Tuesday and Magistrate Robert Kumar ordered Abdurahman be seen by a doctor.
