Over the weekend, President Trump signed an executive order that sees people from countries including Syria, Iran, Iraq and Yemen denied entry into the US, prompting worldwide protests to erupt at airports and in capital cities across the world.
While Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced that Canada will take in refugees now banned by the US and Airbnb are offering free housing to those stranded by the immigration order, Barack Obama has also taken a firm stance against President Trump’s latest political move.
“Citizens exercising their Constitutional right to assemble, organize and have their voices heard by the elected officials is exactly what we expect to see when American values are at stake,” Mr Obama says of people protesting against Trump’s tough immigration laws.
According to TIME, he also “fundamentally disagrees with the notion of discriminating against individuals because of their faith or religion”.
Despite the global backlash of his latest act as President, Trump continues to defend his decision – one that a federal judge in New York was able to temporarily bar over the weekend.
‘It’s not a Muslim ban,” he says. “But it’s working out very nicely.”
