Watts speaks about film industry sexism

Naomi Watts at the 67th Cannes Film Festival.

Speaking at the Calvin Klein’s Women in Film party at the Cannes Film Festival, the 45-year-old star said: “Jane Campion is right to say that there’s an inherent sexism in the film industry. But there’s also a lack of women putting themselves forward”.

The Oscar-nominated actress also said female directors and actors have a different voice and different stories. “It’s not helpful to be compared to men,” she said.

Last week Campion – who is this year’s Palme d’Or jury president  – spoke out about gender inequality in the movie business.

“Time and time again, we don’t get our share of representation. Sorry gentleman, but you do eat more of the cake,” she said.
