Oh dear.

When the cringe-inducing scene with Sarah Murdoch and a case of the wrong winner on Australia’s Next Top Model unfolded, we thought that was the worst of it.

We were wrong, it seems.

Steve Harvey made a spectacle out of himself last night when he accidentally announced the wrong winner to the Miss Universe Competition.

During the much-anticipated final crowning, Harvey announced the winner as being Miss Colombia, Ariadna Gutiérrez-Arévalo.

After receiving her flowers, her crown and her congratulations, the celebrations went on for quite some time before Harvey realised his mistake.

“I have to apologise,” said Harvey, “I will take responsibility for this. It was my mistake.”

A very surprised Miss Philippines, Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach – the actual winner – was called up from the front row where she had returned after “losing”, to receive the crown from a devastated Miss Colombia.

Harvey later issued an apology (wherein he spelt both ‘Philippines’ and ‘Colombia’ wrong – Philippians and Columbia, if you were wondering) for his mistake.

“I’d like to apologize wholeheartedly to Miss Colombia & Miss Philippines for my huge mistake. I feel terrible,” tweeted Harvey.

“Secondly, I’d like to apologize to the viewers at that I disappointed as well. Again it was an honest mistake,” he continued, “I don’t want to take away from this amazing night and pageant. As well as the wonderful contestants. They were all amazing.”
