Victoria’s first female Premier, Joan Kirner, has passed away after a long battle with oesophageal cancer.

The 76-year-old was the 42nd Premier of Victoria and served for two years, after which she remained in public affairs for many years.
Kirner was first elected to parliament as a Member for Melbourne West in 1982 and was later elected as a Member for Williamstown in 1988, where she fought against classism and inequality.
Mrs Kirner was the first and only female Premier of Victoria to date.
She is survived by her husband, Ronald Kirner.
