Toad-hunting teen dies: Life support switched off

A young teenager who was left in a critical condition after being accidentally hit in the head by a golf club has died in hospital.

The Sunshine Coast family of 13-year-old Zeke Douglas who was critically injured while hunting toads with mates, has made the heartbreaking decision to turn off the boy’s life support.

Police believe Zeke was playing on the abandoned Hazeltine Court, which runs along one boundary of the former Horton Park Golf Course site, when a friend accidentally struck him on the back of the head around 7.30pm.

Zeke’s friends and then his mum frantically performed CPR until paramedics arrived. He was later air lifted to Brisbane’s Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital, in a critical condition where he has since died.

AAP reports that police said Zeke’s injury appeared to be a tragic accident and there are no suspicious circumstances.

In the AAP story, the RSPCA has appealed to Queenslanders intent on killing cane toads not to hit them with golf clubs or cricket bats, saying such methods rarely kill the pests.

It says cane toads should be killed humanely by putting them to sleep in the fridge, before freezing them.
