While Donald Trump stood on the debate stage on Wednesday night and denied knowing Vladimir Putin many were quick to remind him of the day he wondered if the Russian President would consider being his “new best friend”.
Yes. Trump tweeted a doozy of a tweet back in 2013 (before he was running for office) and at the final presidential debate moderator, Chris Wallace asked if whether the republican nominee would condemn Russia’s “interference” in the election. In response Trump said: “Of course I condemn.” Adding: “I don’t know Putin. I never met Putin. This is not my best friend.”
But many were quick to remind the 70-year-old of the time he wished he was BFF’s with the polarising leader.
On June 19 2013 Trump wrote:
“Do you think Putin will be going to The Miss Universe Pageant in November in Moscow – if so, will he become my new best friend?”
According to Twitter the three-year-old musing became the most retweeted tweet of debate night.
According to Yahoo a Twitter spokesman said total the third debate did not trend as highly as the second debate, which became the most-tweeted debate of all time with over 17 million tweets.
