It’s time to throw out the “wife beater”.
A campaign was launched in Canberra overnight to rename the famous navy singlet a “respecter” rather than the “wife beater.”
The campaign called This is not a “wife beater” (ThisisNAWB) is a not-for-profit that seeks to challenge the language, attitudes and behaviours that minimise or condone family violence.
Alisa Draskovic has worked on the campaign since 2013, explaining it was an idea born inside the women’s department of Australian National University.
“It’s a way of not only drawing attention to the term ‘wife beater’, but also getting people to come on board and promote respect and respectable relationships,” she told ABC.
“When I heard the term wife beater it struck me… ‘why do we refer to an item of clothing and make a reference to violence against women?’
“It didn’t make sense to me and I wanted to challenge that [and] challenge other people to think differently about that.”
