With the Australian team due to leave our shores bound for Glasgow’s Commonwealth Games sports fans are getting excited about our medal chances.
Just over one hundred athletes have now been officially selected to compete in the track and field events at the Games and one of the most exciting members of that team is hurdler Sally Pearson.
The nation has not forgotten Sally’s Olympic glory as she powered home to a gold medal finish at the 2012 London games and the Queenslander is one of our best hopes to nab top podium position.
With the games due to kick off on July 23 see the other female athletes who will carry our Aussie expectations on their shoulders.
Olympic hurdler Sally Pearson is one of Australia’s best chances at a medal at this month’s Commonwealth Games.
At just 28-years of age hockey player Madonna Blyth is one of veteran members of the Jillaroos team. The Queenslander represented Australia at the 2008 Summer Olympics.
Kimberley Mickle has made the track and field squad challenged with throwing javelin for the Australian team.
Swimmer Cate Campbell is a chance at a medal having won two bronze medals at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing.
Renuga Veeran brings her badminton skills to the Aussie team. The 28-year-old is a dual international, having represented Australia and Malaysia internationally in her sport.
Sprinter Mel Breen will represent Australia as a member of the track team. This year the 23-year-old broke the Australian record for the women’s 100 metre sprint when she clocked 11.11 seconds at the ACT Championships held in February.
Renae Hallinan has been selected for the Australian netball team. The athletic 27-year-old player is taking time out of her Adelaide Thunderbirds duties to player wing-defence for the national side.
When you think lawn bowls you might not think of a young, blonde from Victoria but prepare to be surprised with Carla Odgers. The 24-year-old is no spring chicken in the sport having racked up 39 international appearances.
According to the International Netball Federation Australia is ranked second behind New Zealand in the world so will Julie Corletto and the rest of the Aussie team might be able to knock the Kiwi’s off the podium? Our nation can only hope that the goalkeeper and the rest of the Diamonds can hold off the stiff competition from NZ and the UK.
Brooke Peris is striving for the same athletic glory enjoyed by her aunty Nova as she embarks on a trip with the Commonwealth Games team courtesy of her hockey selection.
