There have been many horrifying images of the Syrian refugee crisis but this one of a Danish police officer playing with a young girl has shown there is still hope even in the most terrible situations.
The picture was taken by photojournalist Michael Drost-Hansen last week on a highway in Denmark.
Part of the road has been closed to allow passage of thousands of refugees who are heading to Germany after fleeing war-torn Syria.
“The picture shows is that even though we have a task that we must solve, then we are also dealing with people who are in a difficult situation that nobody wants to be in,” Assistant police commissioner Knud Reinholdt told BT.
“We have to [deal] with children who have experienced a lot of things, and who have travelled far, so of course we understand it, and if we can make life a little easier for them … then it’s worth it.”
Denmark has opted out of the European Union’s plan to rehome 160,000 refugees across Europe.
