Abbey Boon, formerly Ethan, announced the news to her classmates via a YouTube video during assembly at Mowbray Heights Primary School on July 1.
In the video, the 11-year-old shared her “secret” by using signs to reveal how she has found the courage and confidence to be her true self.
The video has been viewed thousands of times, and her mum Melinda Miles has shed ‘many happy tears’ now that Abbey is finally free.
“At my old school my teacher thought there was something wrong with me because I always hung out with girls,” Abbey said.
“I felt scared coming to a new school, I wondered if people would treat me the same way.
“Then I met a girl called Makayla… she made me feel like I didn’t have to feel different… I could just be me.”
She later continues: “Today, I am telling you that I am transgender. This means I am a girl that was born in a boy’s body.”
With a beautiful smile on her face, she then says goodbye to Ethan and introduces herself as Abbey.
“Now this is the real me!”
Her mum Melinda told Ten Eyewitness News she’s supportive of her little girl.
“She came up to me late last year and she goes ‘I don’t want to be a boy, I want to be a girl’,” she said.
“So I said, ‘Righto, I accept the way you are’, and I support her, I support everything she does.”
Bravo Abbey, we’re so proud of you!
