Sydney skyscraper built 30cm from man’s balcony

Neighbours so close you can reach out and touch them.

Wolli Creek resident Dennis Miller’s neighbours will be so close he could reach out and touch them.

A 14-storey tower is being built less than 30 centimetres from the balcony of Mr Miller’s first-floor apartment – construction approved by Rockdale Council and local planning authorities.

“Development has to happen, I understand that, but it just seems crazy,” Mr Miller told the Sydney Morning Herald.

Mr Miller, who lives with his wife Lin Ling, claims that the construction site next to their south Sydney home, which began last week, threatens the privacy of their one bedroom property and the home’s natural light source.

“I can’t understand how this is legal or even moral,” and enraged Mr Miller reportedly said in a Facebook post last week.

“Come and inspect this and provide an explanation about how this is legal, moral and good for the suburb.”

Rockdale council’s local planning controls require a minimum separation of 12 metres between rooms and balconies in buildings up to four storeys and 18 metres up to nine storeys so it is curious how the construction next to Mr Miller’s home was green lit despite the less than third of a metre in separation.

But a Rockdale Council spokesman has reportedly told news.com.au that the decision about the $20 million building was not under their authority but instead was under the jurisdiction of the joint regional planning panel (JRPP) of the NSW Government which makes decisions about “regionally significant developments” across the state.

But the Rockdale council spokesperson said they are investigating.

“The Mayor is determined to get to the bottom of it and has called for a full investigation,” the spokesman said. “But until we have a full investigation we won’t have the answers.”
