Sydney couple ARRESTED after their baby was found to be malnourished and suffering from rickets

A 33-year-old man and 31-year-old woman will face Waverley Local Court today, answering to charges of allegedly malnourishing their baby girl.

As reported by the Daily Mail, the couple from Sydney’s eastern suburbs were arrested on Friday, April 6 amid charges of alleged abuse and neglect of their 20-month-old child.

The arrests came after a month-long investigation conducted by the State Crime Command’s Child Abuse and Sex Crimes Squad ended in detectives being called to Sydney Children’s Hospital, where the little girl was admitted with a seizure on March 10.

It is for these reasons that police will argue in court that the child was given a very strict diet that the Daily Mail reports was “severely lacking in nutrients for her to thrive’.

What is rikets?

According to Better Health Victoria, rickets is a preventable bone disease that causes soft and weaken bones in infants and young children. Caused by a lack of vitamin D, calcium or phosphorus, it is said that this condition can occur as a result of having dark skin, lack of exposure to sunlight, nutritional deficiencies as well as liver, kidney or small intestine disorders.
