Owners of Black Mocha Café in Sydney’s north shore suburb of Turramurra, have decided to close their café’s kids playroom because of poor behaviour from children and parents alike, reports news.com
Husband-and-wife team John and Claudette Osterberg told The Daily Telegraph they were “heartbroken” to take such a dramatic stand, but felt they had little choice.
“We feel the whole café has changed and part of our dream has been taken away.”
“Some parents would come in and sit on one coffee for three hours and let their kids run amok. I’ve had children come in and do a No. 2 on the bathroom floor and parents just walk away and leave it there for my staff to clean up.”
“It was feral behaviour and we had to make a decision: Do we keep the children or do we keep the café?”
The business owners – who themselves have two children – chose the latter, and broke the news to their customers via a Facebook post which detailed some of the behaviour they’d been subjected to in recent times.
“Since opening, the café has been subjected to:
Children ripping books, breaking toys and drawing on the walls
Kids using furniture as trampolines and kicking fixtures and fittings
Parents changing nappies on lounges, the table tops and the carpet in the kids playroom and then placing dirty nappies on top of dining tables” the announcement read in part.
“We feel that it’s the parent’s responsibility to keep their children reasonably quiet and well-behaved during their visit to the café.”
“But when parents can’t be bothered to do this, there comes a point when the café has to act in the best interest of its patrons as a whole.”
