Swimming legend Susie Maroney has revealed she’s battling skin cancer after discovering a melanoma on her back.
The 41-year-old is scheduled for surgery at Kareena Private hospital in Sydney, where a nine-centimetre long incision is expected to be made to remove a malignant melanoma, The Daily Telegraph reveals.
“I’ve spent all those hours in the water all day, training and marathon swimming… but I didn’t put on any sunscreen,” she told New Idea.
She was prompted to visit her doctor after a stranger noticed a mole on her back and warned her of its potential danger.
Susie was then referred to a skin specialist who confirmed the growth was a malignant nodular melanoma.
She underwent surgery however it did not clear her of the illness. She’s now to undergo a second more intrusive procedure.
“Hopefully, they will get all the melanoma out,” she said.
“If they don’t, I will have to have further tests and scans to see if it has spread anywhere else in my body.”
We’re sending you all of our best wishes, Susie.
