Student dies on school camp

A 17-year-boy has died while on a year 11 camp in remote South Australia.

The boy – from prestigious Melbourne school Huntingtower in Mount Waverley – was on a trek at Plumbago Station when he became ill and died on Monday night.

The Age reports school’s principal Sholto Bowen said the “wonderful young man” became unwell on the first day of the hike. By 5pm, the Royal Flying Doctor Service was racing to his location but were alerted mid-flight that he had died.

The boy’s cause of death is not yet known but Mr Bowen said the boy was not bitten by an animal or snake and didn’t fall.

“There was no accident, there was no animal. He just wasn’t feeling well,” he said.

The surviving students are on a 14-hour bus trip back to Melbourne with a grief counsellor on board.
