Straight, single men from Syria will be denied access to Canada under the country’s refugee plan.
However, gay men, women, and families with children, will be welcome.
Leaked details of the plan appeared in two Canadian media reports overnight.
CBC says the plan clearly bans straight, single men from the list of people that can be approved for refugee status.
The Citizen also says Canada “will not accept lone males, at least during the first wave of migrants. But this approach will come with an important caveat: the government is sensitive to the fact that gay men escaping violence in the region could be persecuted, so they will be permitted to come to Canada.”
CBC says “ongoing concerns” about “unaccompanied men seeking asylum” means that they will not be part of the program.
Full details are due to be released today.
Canadian authorities have been screening about 100 people a day in Lebanon. It plans to settle 25,000 Syrian refugees by the end of the year.
