A Perth woman who flew overseas, leaving her two stepchildren at home alone, has defended her actions and instead put the blame on the post office.
The 28-year-old woman boarded an overseas flight to Bali with the father of the two young children (who are aged four and six) to renew her visa but couldn’t take them because apparently the post office lost her children’s passports.
She told Seven News through an interpreter: “If you want to leave the country to go overseas you have to have your passport, that’s common sense.”
According to Seven News Perth reporter Jamie Freestone who spoke to Radio 6PR, when the woman was asked whether the children could look after themselves, she said the matter was between her and them.
She left the country on Tuesday and when she returned on Thursday, she was greeted by Border Force at Perth international airport.
While she was gone, police went to the Cloverdale home on Wednesday and found the children inside with no adults present and the door unlocked.
It was discovered by Child Abuse Squad detectives that they’d been left alone since Tuesday, and the father is still overseas.
The woman has been charged with two counts of knowingly engaging in conduct that may harm a child in her care, and the children are now in the hands of departmental officers.
Investigations will continue.
