Michelle Obama’s style has been coveted and admired since she took on the role of First Lady eight years ago.
Michelle is renowned for choosing American designers and she catapulted relatively new designer, Jason Wu to worldwide fame when he created her stunning 2009 inauguration ball gown.
Now, Michelle has come full circle, choosing Wu to dress her for Barack Obama’s farewell speech, just as she chose him for the inauguration.
Michelle wore a custom sheer lace Jason Wu A-line dress, marking the beginning and end of her time as FLOTUS with a designer who’s been a huge part of her time in the White House.
It was a thoughtful and a chic touch – how very Michelle!
Wu was one of her go-to designers from the moment she stepped out in the show-stopping inauguration dress.
“I was in awe when I saw her. I was emotional, I was amazed,” Wu told PEOPLE at the time. “I wanted the dress to reflect hope, fantasy, a dream [because] this is a pretty surreal moment we’re living in.”
Meanwhile, commentators on Twitter were quick to question the absence of Sasha Obama.
The 15-year-old’s absence was particularly noticeable when Malia adorably broke down in tears during her father’s speech as people wondered where their youngest daughter was.
However, the reason she wasn’t in attendance was so refreshingly normal.
A White House official told CBS News that Sasha stayed back in D.C. because she has an exam at school on Wednesday morning.
Well that’s got to suck! Even being daughter of the President of the United States doesn’t get you out of tests apparently…
