Jack Heath is a 28-year-old Sydney man who has spent the last decade watching his mother battle an early onset of dementia.
And 11 photographs have told the story behind the battle so simply, paired with honest words from the 28-year-old.
Posting the series of photographs on Reddit under the headline โThis is what Early Onset Dementia looks like,โ Jackโs post has gone viral, touching a chord with many.
Jackโs 58-year-old mum, Jacquie, was diagnosed with Picks disease โ a form of dementia โ 10 years ago after she was originally misdiagnosed with doctors, blaming the symptoms on menopause.
In the last photograph taken Jack writes, โShe still smiles and laughs sometimes. I have no idea why. I really hope she dies soon.โ
โThis was taken in 2005 or so. At this point, Jacqui had Pickโs Disease, but it had been misdiagnosed as menopause. She would be about 48 here.โ
โOn the beach, around 2010. Lots of Jacquie around. She canโt remember too much though.โ
โ2010 again. Riding on the back of dadโs motorbike was one of her favourite things to do. She got quite terrified when the helmets were on, but once moving had a blast. This had to stop in 2011, when an on-bike paranoia attack nearly caused an accident.โ
โBeach-time walks. Weight is falling off. Conversation is non-existent.โ
โThe birth of her first grandchild. She had been looking forward to being a grandmother for years.โ
โStill knows how to party. #yolo.โ
โCuddles with her 14 month old grandson. Heโs very careful with her, knows sheโs special.โ
โShe doesnโt walk very much anymore. And she has lost a large amount of weight.โ
โFun times at the beach. Sheโs 58 here. Her eyes arenโt always open, and if they are, sheโs staring into the void.โ
โSometimes weโll move her to beanbags on the floor.โ
โShe still smiles and laughs sometimes. I have no idea why. I really hope she dies soon.โ
