Just 10 days after the devastating Bourke Street car rampage, it is has been revealed that a sixth person has lost their life in the senseless attack in Melbourne’s CBD.
The 33-year-old woman from Melbourne’s Blackburn South joins five others who were tragically killed in the horrific events that transpired on January 20, including three-month-old Zachary Bryant, 10-year-old Thalia Hakin, Matthew Si, Jess Mudie and, as reported by News.com.au, an unidentified Japanese man.
Following the attack, another 37 people were treated for injuries in surrounding hospitals, 10 of them still recovering in hospital, with one in a critical condition.
As reported by the ABC, the accused offender, 26-year-old Dimitrious Gargasoulas, has been charged with five counts of murder. He will stay in custody and face court through a video link in August.
As previously reported by The Weekly, Mr Gargasoulas – a man who is said to have been “well known” to police – was on bail for another crime at the time of the car rampage.
On January 14, Gargasoulas was charged with an undisclosed crime, however, he was granted bail by an after-hours judge against police’s recommendations.
Yesterday, Gargasoulas’ younger brother, who was allegedly knifed by Gargasoulas on the Friday morning of the Bourke Street attack, took to Facebook to express his concern for the victims of the rampage.
“To all the families of the victims involved in last Fridays tragedy, my heart goes out to you and for all those still fighting in hospital, my thoughts are with you and your recovery,” he wrote on Facebook.
“No one could’ve predicted what Jimmy did or that he’d do that, that morning.”
“I’m fortunate enough to still have my life and the support I have received is unheard of! I thank everyone involved in making this an easier time for everyone else involved, and my family.”
