A male Indian leopard has walked into a school in the Indian city of Bangalore and attacked six people.
A video has emerged of the horrific event where the leopard lunges at anyone it can get close to. One man is seen trying to jump over a fence to escape, and as he tries to fight him off, the animal sinks its teeth into his arm.
The 10-hour attempt to contain the leopard finally ended after a conservation scientist and forest department employee tranquilised him. They were both wounded after the tranquilisers finally took effect.
Luckily, the animal’s unannounced arrival occurred over the weekend, so no students were present.
As for how the leopard actually got into the school grounds, chief wildlife officer, Ravi Ralph, told BBC Hindi that it’s possible the leopard jumped over the wall from a nearby forest.
Those injured in the terrifying ordeal have been treated for the minor injuries, and the leopard has now been moved to a national park.
Scarily, this may not be the last time we hear of such an incident. India’s leopard population is estimated between 12,000 and 14,000, and as residential and urban areas increasingly expand into animal habitats, they start venturing out to populated areas.
