The revelation, made in documents obtained by a South African television station, undermines the prosecution’s argument that Pistorius’ fatal shooting of Steencamp at their Pretoria home on Valentine’s Day last year was a premeditated act.

According to the document, the state’s ballistics expert believes Pistorius was “on his stumps” when he fired the shots that killed Steenkamp through a bathroom door.

Prosecutors had argued that Pistorius took time to put on his legs before firing the shots, indicating that he was not as panicked as he has claimed.

Pistorius, who is charged with murder and goes to trial on March 3 in Johannesburg, says he believed his girlfriend was an intruder.
