Washing machines linked to house fires prompt nation-wide recall

A major electronics company has been forced to issue a recall on thousands of its washing machines, after they were linked to hundreds of house fire incidents across Australia.

Do you have one of these Samsung washing machines in your home?

If so, consumer advocacy group, CHOICE, is urging you to return it immediately and seek a full refund, as a range of Samsung top-loaders have been linked to house fires.

“If you have a potentially faulty Samsung washing machine it is time to act to protect your family,” says a CHOICE spokesperson, “We are encouraging consumers with a faulty machine to seek a full refund. We are not confident that the repairs Samsung is making are fixing the problem.”

This warning comes after 196 confirmed incidences of faulty wiring were reported within the past two years; with 18 of those occurring after the washing machine had already been supposedly repaired by the company. Of those 196 reports, one Lake Macquarie family was lucky to escape with their lives after their Samsung top-loader caught fire during a cycle.

The family, two adults and two children, had to spend several hours in a local hospital after their house caught fire in the early evening. According to an interview to the smh, the two children were left covered in “black, toxic, chemical grease”, from the flames and products in the machine.

“When the ambulance came and put the blood pressure monitor on she said, ‘You alright love? … Was that a Samsung washing machine?” said the mother, Mrs Jordan.

Fortunately, no one was badly injured in the blaze.

This isn’t, however, the first time a Samsung machine has threatened a family’s lives, and it is reports like these that have prompted Samsung to recall thousands of their products on the market, nation-wide.

But although machines awaiting sale in stores and departments have been returned to the manufacturer, there are still those within Australian homes that have yet to be surrendered.

In their report, CHOICE indicated that there are almost 144,000 Samsung machines affected by this faulty wiring problem, and an estimated 83,000 are still in Australian homes.

If you own one of the models listed below, both CHOICE and The Australian Women’s Weekly strongly urge you to return it to the store you bought it from for full refund.

The recalled models include:
