Baby kangaroo rescued from mine shaft

How the joey and three other kangaroos ended up there is a mystery.

Four kangaroos have been rescued from a mine shaft in south-west Victoria, Australian Geographic reports.

After spotting the distressed kangaroos – who had fallen down a 5m shaft just off to the side of an unnamed trail – a group of bushwalkers immediately alerted wildlife authorities.

Wildlife rescuer Manfred Zabinskas was amazed that the roos had been found at all, and after abseiling down the shaft, sedated all four kangaroos including two adult males, a mother and her young joey, and took them to the nearby Hepburn Wildlife Shelter.

Unfortunately the mother, who had a broken tail, was euthanized, while the smaller male later died from his injuries.

The joey, Foxglove, underwent surgery earlier in the week, and will thankfully live to hop another day.
