Hughes was convicted of 10 child sex charges on April 7, including seven counts of indecent assault, two counts of sexual assault and one count of assault with an act of indecency.
According to the Daily Telegraph, Judge Peter Zahra said the 65-year-old had to be sentenced based on sentencing laws at the time of his offences.
“He was in a position of trust and took advantage of that trust,” Judge Zahra said.
Hughes’ wife, Robyn Gardiner, did not attend the sentence hearing at the District Court today.
Hughes’ lawyer, Greg Walsh, told the media that Ms Gardiner was “very devastated”.
