Pregnant Somali refugee to return to Australia to seek counselling

Authorities earlier claimed that the woman "changed her mind" about an abortion after requesting one.

A pregnant Somali refugee who says she was raped on Nauru will return to Australia for further counseling.

News Ltd quotes Immigration Minister Peter Dutton saying the government will “facilitate her return” but wouldn’t say when this would occur on grounds of privacy.

The 23-year-old woman, known as Abyan, was flown to Australia earlier this month for an abortion but returned to the island after five days, having not had the procedure.

The Immigration Department said she changed her mind, but this is disputed by volunteers working closely with the refugees on Nauru.

Mr Dutton said since returning to Nauru the woman had decided to again return to Australia to “seek some expert assistance from medical staff in Australia.”

He said he didn’t want it to become a media spectacle.

“The lady deserves her privacy. If there was an allegation of rape made in Australia the victim would be treated with the utmost respect and that’s what should happen in relation to these matters as well,” he said.
