You probably all know the deodorant Old Spice by their hilarious ads, but now the personal hygiene product has got people talking for the painful red and purple rashes it’s leaving on men and women’s underarms.

Customers are taking legal action against the deodorant company, called Procter & Gamble, for more than $5 million in damages.

Hundreds of complaints have been made via social media and to the consumer affairs website. On the site, it’s rated one star.

One customer said: “I used the Old Spice pure sport and after a couple of days my underarms were raw. It burned so bad that I had to hold ice packs under my arms for a couple of days because of the burn.”

Another said: “It was truly unreal. It made them blister and bleed. There should be a total recall on this deodorant because of the chemical burns. I am keeping the original to have it tested.”

New social media images have surfaced about the wounds it has been leaving, but it has been affecting customers since at least 2014.

Michael Smith posted a video to YouTube warning people of the burns he received.

“I’ve been using Old Spice for a long time, no problems with it, no burns under my arms or anything,” he said.

“Recently I purchased Old Spice High Endurance Fresh, as you can see I’ve used it many times.

“I started developing these red marks under my arms three or four days ago.”

Rodney Colley from Ohio, US, is the lead plaintiff in the legal case against the company.

He had no issues using some Old Spice products in the past, but after using Old Spice: Pure Sport High Endurance Deodorant for the first time, he felt like his armpit was on fire. The product had caused chemical burns to his skin.

According to a report by USA Today, 13 products are being investigated in the lawsuit, including Old Spice Lionpride and Arctic Force High Endurance deodorants.

Procter & Gamble spokesman Damon Jones told USA Today the products were safe to use. He also said the problems customers were experiencing were actually skin reactions, not chemical burns, that could be caused by ingredients such as alcohol or fragrance.

“We go to great lengths to ensure our products are safe to use, and tens of millions of men use this product with confidence and without incident every year,” he said.

“A small number of men may experience irritation due to alcohol sensitivity, a common ingredient across virtually all deodorant products. For men who have experienced a reaction to a deodorant, an antiperspirant may be a better option because they have a different formulation.”
