A controversial new documentary has apparently unearthed love letters between the late Pope John Paul II and Anna-Teresa Tymieniecka, a married Polish-born American philosopher.
Airing tomorrow on BBC 1, Panorama: The Secret Letters of Pope John Paul II will look into John Paul II’s personal life, a pope of 27 years who later died in 2005.
Anna-Teresa worked on the English translation of a book with John Paul II, and as a result, “spent hundreds of hours with him, sometimes with his secretary present, but often alone,” said author John Cornwell, who wrote about the pair.
The two engaged in letter correspondence for four years.
The Vatican has dimissed the story, with a source claiming the content is “more smoke than fire,” according to The Guardian.
Anna-Teresa, who was married to a Harvard professor, has previously denied a romantic relationship between herself and John Paul II.
The documentary is not expected to allege that their relationship ever became physical.
