Christmas is coming up fast, and if it feels to you like a pointless, empty charade to be celebrating peace to all mankind this year, well, you’re not alone.
The Pope himself says the message of Christmas has been lost in this year of terror and violence.
The Telegraph in London reports that Pope Francis was attending the unveiling of the Vatican’s Christmas free when he gave a mournful sermon, saying: “Christmas is approaching: there will be lights, parties, Christmas trees and nativity scenes … but it’s all a charade.
“The world continues to go to war. The world has not chosen a peaceful path.
“There are wars today everywhere, and hate,” citing the Paris terrorist attacks, the bombing of a Russian airliner, a double suicide bombing in Lebanon, and the murder of civilians in Israel.
“We should ask for the grace to weep for this world, which does not recognise the path to peace,” the Pope said.
“To weep for those who live for war. God weeps, Jesus weeps.”
He added: “War can be ‘justified’ for many reasons. But when the whole world is at war, as it is today … there is no justification.”
