Policeman’s son wears dad’s hat to funeral

It’s the sight that brought tears to the eyes of even the toughest NSW police detectives.

Seven-year-old Patrick Richardson had the entire police force in tears yesterday as he wore his late father’s hat say goodbye to his hero yesterday.

NSW Police Sergeant Geoffrey Richardson was killed in a police pursuit in Allandale in the Hunter Valley earlier this month when the car he was travelling in hit a tree while trying to get ahead to lay road spikes out.

Yesterday, hundreds of friends, family member and fellow officers turned out to farewell him at Christ Church Cathedral in Newcastle.

Chief among the mourners were little Patrick, his five-month-old brother Aiden and his mother and Geoffrey’s wife Margaret, who met Geoffrey when they joined the force together.

“My life is undoubtedly richer for having you in it,” she said in his eulogy. “You finally had the life you deserved and wanted and in a split second it’s all been lost.

“You were a brave, fiercely loyal, dedicated, hard-working man who I am so proud of.

“Goodbye Geoffrey, thank you for the life that you gave us. We are so proud and will miss you forever.”
