The hunt is on for a man who sexually assaulted a 16-year-old girl as she was sleeping inside her Melbourne bedroom.

The home invasion happened on Friday morning in Roxburgh Park.

CCTV footage captured him fleeing the scene of the horrific sex attack, and police hope the footage will prompt people to recognise him by his “distinct walk”.

Reports say the offender broke into the house through a kitchen window just after 7am, and assaulted the teenager for 25 minutes.

He forced her into the bathroom before escaping through the window. The rest of the family were asleep during the terrifying incident.

CCTV footage shows the intruder jumping the fence, picking up his jacket and fleeing the area. Detective Senior Sergeant Jason Walsh told reporters on Saturday that from the footage, the attacker has a “distinctive walk”.

Police are deeply concerned as they’re not sure if the attack was random or if he’d stalked the victim.

“We urge anyone who knows this guy to call Crime Stoppers,” Sen Sgt Walsh said.

Police have also released a computer-generated image of the intruder.

He is described as in his early-to-mid 20s, Caucasian, about 177cm tall with a thin and muscular build, clean shaven, and spoke with an Australian accent.

The man was wearing a pink T-shirt, dark jeans and a dark jacket.

“I’d urge people to have a close look at the image because there will be someone out there in the community who knows who he is,” said Detective Senior Sergeant Jason Walsh from the Sexual Crimes Squad.

“This is a horrific crime and incredibly traumatic for the victim and her family.”
