Police have told The Courier Mail one of two 9kg LPG gas cylinders is suspected to have fuelled the explosion, after initial investigations.

39-year-old Charlie Hinder was in a caravan parked in the front yard of the family home with his two sons when the explosion occurred.

A woman believed to be his wife was inside the home at the time.

While she has been released from hospital suffering minor injuries and shock, Charlie, and his two boys – believed to be Nyobu, 7, and River, 4 – were killed in the blast.

“The caravan is totally destroyed,” Mt Isa Superintendent Russell Miller told The Courier Mail.

While Police could last night not rule out a murder-suicide they would not confirm reports there was a custody dispute and marriage breakdown.

“Until we can examine the scene, we are treating the situation with an open mind,” said Superintendent Miller.

The explosion shook homes up to one kilometre away in the town, and specialists were sent from Brisbane and Townsville immediately to investigate.
