Police dig up yard in search of toddler no one noticed was missing

State Crime Command Homicide squad is conducting inquiries into the disappearance of a 22-month-old boy who has not been accounted for since 2007.

Police in Queensland have collected materials from the backyard of a south of Brisbane home believed to be in relation to the disappearance of a 22-month-old boy not accounted for since 2007.

Forensics officers arrived at the Wagawn Street property in Woodridge early on Thursday morning and began digging up the backyard until the late afternoon as officers stood guard at the gate, reports the Courier Mail.

“State Crime Command Homicide squad is conducting inquiries into the disappearance of a 22-month-old boy who has not been accounted for since 2007,” a NSW Police spokeswoman said.

They later added: “A number of items were seized today from the Woodridge home which will undergo forensic testing.”

A family allegedly lived at the address in 2007 before moving to NSW, where authorities were notified that the boy was missing.

There are reports believed the boy was not reported missing until January this year to NSW authorities – almost a decade after he was accounted for – but police have not confirmed this, reports The Courier Mail.

A police spokesperson said: “NSW detectives are being assisted by Queensland police.”

Neighbours told media they were surprised by the investigation and the thought a child might have been buried in the yard all these years.

“It’s surprising, you wouldn’t think that sort of thing would happen around here,” said one unidentified man who had reportedly lived in the street for 13 years.

“It’s a very quiet neighbourhood so it’s a shock to walk outside and see all of the police.

“There haven’t been any major crimes since I’ve been here.”
