A senior ranking police official, Assistant Commissioner Brett Guerin, has resigned as head of the Professional Standards Command after bigoted and offensive comments were discovered being made online under the false name, Vernon Demerest.

The Age revealed the offensive comments being made on social media under the false name last week. The publication reports the shocking commentaries refer to “cheating dagos”, “third world dullards”, “Indian and Pakistani peasant[s]” and “jigaboo[s]”. He allegedly also made comments on YouTube videos referring to rape and molestation.

The following comment was made in the comment section of a video of a Somali pirate attack:

“I’m afraid this is what happens when the lash is abolished. The jigaboo runs riot and out of control. The ‘boo needs the lash. The ‘boo wants the lash. Deep, deep down the ‘boo knows the lash provides the governance and stability.”

Last week, Guerin was investigated by the anti-corruption commission.

On Monday, Guerin handed in his resignation after one hour after the publication shared the news, and the Chief Commissioner has since accepted the resignation.

Guerin was appointed Assistant Commissioner in 2015, and has been a police officer for 40 years.

Mr Guerin has since made a public apology and told radio station 3AW last week that he is ashamed.

“It’s crude and coarse language and, you know, what I’m most ashamed about is my mother and my daughters have read it now.”

“The language I used … was completely inappropriate, embarrassing and I can understand people saying ‘what the hell is this bloke doing?’.”
