Hours after losing contact with the plane on the island of Eleuthera. The Coast Guard tweeted that crews had located debris but the search for survivors was continuing.

Pilot Nathan Ulrich, 52, had spent Mother’s Day in Puerto Rico with his girlfriend, Jennifer Blumin, 40, and her two sons, Phineas, four, and Theodore, two.

The family were flying back to the east coast of Florida when authorities lost contact.

“It’s a search and rescue,” said US Coast Guard Petty Officer Eric Woodall.

“We’re searching as long as we think we can find them alive.”

“There’s no indication of significant adverse weather at the time,” said Coast Guard spokesman Lt. Cmdr. Ryan Kelly.

Ulrich’s ex-wife Rae Dawn Chong, daughter of comedian Tommy Chong, told New York Post that any failure would be mechanical.

“He’s an excellent pilot. You couldn’t get a better pilot,” she said.

“I’ve flown many hundreds of miles with him. It had to be a plane issue.

“The whole thing is horrible. I’m in shock.”

Mr Ulrich’s father, who only found out about the disappearance from a reporter’s phone call, told New York Post through tears, “I’m afraid it’s a little hard to talk about it.

“Right now, we’re still dealing with the uncertainty. We have nothing other than they’re still searching and haven’t found any definitive evidence of any kind one way or the other.

“We’re expecting to hear from the Coast Guard with a general report at 5pm.”
