Trial judge Thokozile Masipa ordered the 27-year-old be assessed for a mental illness after an application from Prosecutor Gerrie Nel.
Psychiatrist Meryll Vorster reportedly told the court earlier this week that the athlete was suffering from anxiety.
ABC News reported Prosecutor Nel wanted to stop Pistorius, who shot and killed his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp, from later appealing on the basis of a mental condition.
Judge Masipa said the details of the evaluation would be handed down next week.
Pistorius has denied premeditated murder. If convicted, he faces life in prison.
