Oscar Pistorius will spend just four years in jail, according to legal experts.
The disgraced Paralympian is due to be sentenced today over the Valentine’s Day murder of his model girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.
The minimum sentence for murder is 15 years, which is what the state prosecutor is asking for, but leading defence lawyer Mike Hellens, who is a long-time friend of the Judge Thokozile Masipa, told The Daily Mail she will ignore the minimum sentence guidelines.
Hellens says Masipa will instead opt for a seven-year sentence, which will see Pistorius spending three-and-a-half years behind bars.
He recently did a TV interview, saying that he could still smell Reeva’s blood.
“And to know that that’s your fault, that that’s what you’ve done.
“And I understand the pain people feel, that loved her and miss her. I feel that same pain. I feel that same hate for myself.”
But Pistorius’ father Henke has expressed his concerns the judge will be bullied into giving his son an “unfair” harsher sentence.
Pistorius shot and killed Reeva in the bathroom of his Pretoria home in the early hours of February 14, 2013. He claims he mistook her for an intruder.
